Amos 6:3-7

3 ^aO you who put far away the day of disaster
^band bring near the seat of violence?
4 “Woe to those ^cwho lie on ^dbeds of ivory
^eand stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
^fand calves from the midst of the stall,
5 ^gwho sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David ^hinvent for themselves instruments of music,
6 ⁱwho drink wine in bowls
and ^janoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
7 ^kTherefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”

Revelation of John 18:11-19

11 And ^lthe merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls. ^{▼▼Or and slaves, and human lives}

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
are lost to you,
never to be found again!”
15 ⁿThe merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, ^owill stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
^pthat was clothed in fine linen,
in purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold,
with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For ^qin a single hour all this wealth ^rhas been laid waste.”
And ^sall shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and ^tcried out ^uas they saw the smoke of her burning,

^v“What city was like the great city?”
19 And they threw ^wdust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

“Alas, alas, for the great city
^xwhere all who had ships at sea
grew rich by her wealth!
For ^yin a single hour she has been laid waste.
